Aging may be inevitable, but looking your best is a choice. And for many people, plastic surgery is the preferred choice for maintaining a youthful appearance. But what are the best procedures for rejuvenating your face?

To answer this question, we approached Dr. Renato Saltz—a Castle Connolly Top Doctor practicing out of multiple Utah locations. He shared his expertise about facial rejuvenation.

“The fact of the matter is that many of us don’t like what we see staring back in the mirror,” Dr. Saltz states. “All we see are baggy eyes, a drooping jawline, puffy eyelids, loose skin, crow’s feet, and other imperfections.”

Not surprisingly, then, Dr. Saltz says the eyes are a key feature to looking young. He jokes that the windows to our soul often need to be fixed. “Eyes are frequently regarded as the most attractive facial feature, but they are the first area to show signs of aging,” he explains. This is because the skin around the eyes is among the thinnest on the entire human body. As a result, it’s easily damaged by the sun, cold, and wind. Plus, our eyes are always exposed. Sunglasses certainly help, but it’s not feasible to wear them all day, every day.

With this in mind, Dr. Saltz says blepharoplasty—commonly known as eyelid surgery—can make patients look about 10 years younger. Eyelid surgery removes excess skin and fat, and tightens the underlying muscles to give your eyes a much younger, refreshed look.

“Year in and year out, blepharoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in my office because the results are dramatic, yet at the same time subtle,” he asserts. “Unlike more noticeable procedures such as breast augmentation or a complete facelift, most people won’t know you’ve had eyelid surgery.” The surgery can be done to the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both.

  • In upper eyelid surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision in the natural crease of the eyelid to conceal any scarring. Dr. Saltz explains that he then tightens the muscle tissue, repositions the fat, and removes excess skin.

  • In the lower eyelid, the incision is usually made just below the lower eyelash but can also be done inside the lower lid. Excess skin is removed to lessen wrinkles, bags, and general puffiness in this area.

Another effective facial rejuvenation treatment is a brow lift. “Aging causes the skin on our forehead and above our eyebrows to sag, giving the impression that we are either tired, sad, or angry,” Dr. Saltz explains. A brow lift softens forehead wrinkles and frown lines, tightens the skin across the brow, and gives the patient a more relaxed appearance.

There is only one type of brow lift today —the endoscopic approach. Dr. Saltz explains that the old “traditional coronal brow lift” is rarely utilized by modern plastic surgeons. “The scar is too long, can cause hair loss and permanent numbness in the forehead and scalp,” he says.

With an endoscopic brow lift, the surgeon makes several small incisions behind the hairline and uses an endoscope (camera) to visualize all the deeper anatomical structures. “The endoscope enables the surgeon to see beneath the skin without making the long incision of the traditional method,” Dr. Saltz explains. The other incisions are used to lift the skin, remove tissue, and adjust the frowning muscles.

If you’re considering any of these procedures, Dr. Saltz encourages you to work with a board-certified plastic surgeon. “Facial rejuvenation surgeries are intricate procedures that require skill and precision to be done safely and successfully,” he explains. “In my opinion, it is best to seek out a plastic surgeon who has the proven education and experience to give you the results you’re looking for.”
